FIRE TIMES TWO Many locals still remember the front page headlines that proclaimed the historic Breitbach building was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 2007 . The community and others from all over the country rallied around the family , and the beloved restaurant was back up and running in less than six months , reopening on June 14 , 2008 .
Then on October 24 , 2008 , a short ten months to the day of the first fire , history repeated itself and Mike Breitbach learned that his beloved restaurant was on fire once again . Mike , his family , and the community were in shock . The decision to rebuild a second time was a harder decision for Mike , Cindy , and their family . The announcement that Iowa ’ s oldest bar and restaurant would once again stand came shortly before Christmas 2008 . On August 1 , 2009 , the doors opened once again and patrons flooded the Balltown restaurant for their home style cooking .
People from everywhere have come to Breitbach ’ s Country Dining over the years to enjoy , not only the atmosphere , but the amazing dining . Some notable visitors include outlaw Jesse James , George Wendt (“ Norm ” from Cheers ), Brook Shields , and Governor Branstad .
ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFETS At Breitbach ’ s everything is made from scratch . The food is so good that many diners often order soups , salads , and pies to take home with them . Brietbach ’ s features a lunch buffet every day they are open and a special dinner buffet is served Wednesday through Sunday . All the buffets at Breitbach ’ s include their famous homemade soup , salad bar , and rolls .
The Friday Night All-You-Can-Eat Buffet features broasted chicken , beer battered codfish , baked codfish , whole catfish , shrimp alfredo , popcorn shrimp , crab legs , potato wedges , mashed potatoes and gravy , and corn . The Saturday Night All-You-Can-Eat Buffet features broasted chicken , barbeque ribs , beer battered codfish , popcorn shrimp , mashed potatoes and gravy , and corn .
Stop in on Sunday and enjoy the All-You- Can-Eat Breakfast Buffet from 8:00-11:00 a . m ., which includes scrambled eggs , eggs benedict , biscuits and gravy , French toast , breakfast potatoes , sausage , ham , bacon , fruit bar , juice , and coffee . Or come from 11:30 a . m . -7:30 p . m . and feast on the All-You- Can-Eat Sunday Dinner Buffet of broasted chicken , roast pork , sage dressing , popcorn shrimp , glazed ham , red cabbage , mashed potatoes and gravy , and corn .
