CULTURE SMUDGE

TEXT SHARNA LORRAINE CALLENDER
We can all most certainly agree that stereotypes play a huge part in the world of fashion , and we all , consciously or not , definitely label , and make assumptions on people by what they wear or where they may come from . But fashion has been progressively moving in a different direction . No particular style or trend is targeted at one race as it would have been before . It ’ s no longer just the black girl with cane rowed hair , slicked down edges , and big hooped earrings , nor the white female with fitted crop tops , styled in Topshop from head to toe . Iggy Azalea is the epitome of a white girl ; picking and choosing aspects of black culture they like for their own style , whilst avoiding institutionalised racism that is prevalent in society today . Although I think sharing between cultures is a great thing , I think it ’ s important to make sure that it stems from respect and that we do not dismiss years of cultural heritage for the sake of a fashion statement .
