CULTURE S / S 14

JUICEBOX

EDITOR ’ S LETTER move to Japan . I love the whole eastern culture , their work ethic their style , and they love art .
// B It ’ s funny , as the eastern parts are constantly trying to westernise there selves and your pushing for the total opposite !
N \\ Amalgamation ! Thats what we ’ re planning on doing , collaborating with eastern companies .
— wherever God puts me . // B Do your beliefs have an real impact with in you work ?
N \\ My beliefs has a lot of influence on my work . I like to think that my ideas are from gods influence . At school studying art and design , the design element is progression , but the old guys ( angelo , Di Vinci ) they ’ re books are filled with designs , work and ideas . They had the end image in mind but went back and redesign . Di Vinci is a don . Thats the kind of method that I take , I have the image , I get influence by what God tells me , I then start developing it by tests - or else I feel lazy , a bit of research for the client but for myself I just jump in . For clients and for work for show its good to have backing work there . I put my all into everything .
// B It ’ s great being able to see process , from just ideas to the finish result ! That moment when you sit back and think to your self , wow I created this !
// B okay random question time ! here it goes … If your shrunken down into a penny size and you have been thrown into blender you have 60 seconds to escape , how would you ? N \\ okay ! I would hold onto the blade and hopefully fly off without getting splatted , Actually I don ’ t think it would work . I wanna rethink my answer … lets say I ’ d run up the side and grab onto the lid ! and just chill until someone reopens it .
N \\ I also love the process , from the beginning image to referencing images , working with stylists , collaboration to the final image . With my last project my girlfriend got to see the whole thing , I . E me taking photos of ribbons , ( not some weird contemporary dance , which she may of thought ) then I started drawing , showing her the progression . Each time I saw her , I could show her how a simple bit of “ contemporary dance ” can develop into something far greater .
// B I can tell you the answer is very simple ! You ’ d jump out ! brain tease or what ?
N \\ Ahh what ?
// B supposedly your body mass and gravitational pull would be the same meaning you can jump straight out !
// B Are brands ever funny about you exposing your on work for a promotional sense ? Say if you were commissioned by a certain name or company ?
N \\ Because i ’ m part of a blog , working with brands works both ways for exposure . if I got employed by Ralph Lauren for instance , I wouldn ’ t be able to put my name on it . It depends on the situation , if it was a collaboration with a brand you have the right , but if you ’ ve just been employed for artwork , it can be a pain . However generally I ’ ve had good luck so far .
// B whats up and coming for you ?
// B What is the Cringiest moment in the industry ?
N \\ Theres been so many , okay I have one after the Hacket S / S14 show , I had just met Samuel L jackson , I was quite excited then I had a little interview with mr . porter . But because I was hyped for that , the way I responded was so aggressive to what was your number one item to take away “ LAPTOP , LAPTOP CASE !” and they cut it like that , so I looked crazy ! My friends call me laptop case . I got interviewed again surprisingly ,
// B Im sure they where clad in padding and helmets ! From crazy Laptop Nas !
N \\ I might have an exhibition in Covent Garden real soon . Working potentially with a brand to paint on jackets , so it could be very exciting .
N \\ [ laugh ] I made sure I was calm but they didn ’ t even press record , I don ’ t want to be cast as the angry black guy at fashion week !
Oh god , you got Nas-ed !
