A MESSAGE
from the Dean

Nicholas Giordano

As dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics , I have the pleasure of learning every day about the impressive accomplishments of our students , faculty , and staff . At the same time , one of my main jobs is preparing our college for the future so that our students , faculty , and staff are able to accomplish even greater things . This edition of Journey magazine gives you news on the latest accomplishments in COSAM , along with a taste of where we are headed . As has become the norm , our students and faculty continue to garner high honors . Chloe Chaudhury , a student majoring in biochemistry , was selected as a finalist for a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship , and Professor Geoff Hill from the Department of Biological Sciences was selected as the inaugural winner of the Auburn University Advancement of Research and Scholarship Award .
While I am quite proud of these accomplishments and recognitions , I am equally excited about the future . We are now in the planning stages of three new buildings that will house COSAM departments . We are scheduled to break ground this summer on a major addition to the Leach Science Center , which will provide modern classroom space for physics classes along with new space for faculty and research labs . The newly approved Interdisciplinary Science Building will be home to the Department of Geosciences along with the portion of the Department of Biological Sciences that is currently housed in Funchess Hall . The third new building will be the Academic Classroom and Laboratory Complex , which will contain state-of-the-art classrooms and labs to be used by all COSAM departments . These new facilities will allow us to continue innovating the foundational courses that we teach to all Auburn students , offer superior advanced courses for our majors , and support faculty research with outstanding laboratories .
In addition to the great work being done by our students , faculty , and staff , COSAM alumni and friends continue to provide outstanding support . We are making terrific progress toward our goal in the Because This is Auburn campaign . The campaign is raising funds for student scholarships , faculty support , and new facilities , including our new buildings . Indeed , during the recent Tiger Giving Day in December , we raised funds to support a new astronomy teaching laboratory that will be housed in the Leach Science Center . We are extremely grateful for the support from the COSAM family and will continue to make you proud of our college .
