HIGHLIGHTS from the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs MAKING A DIFFERENCE The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs in the College of Sciences and Mathematics celebrates and promotes diversity in mathematics and the sciences by striving to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of outstanding minority students. The office provides academic support and encourages students to actively participate in both academic and social aspects of college life. Recruitment: Recruitment initiatives regularly target more than 2,000 students of color each semester through campus and off-site events. Campus events include the annual Minority High School Visitation Day, which brings approximately 100 students, parents, and counselors from area high schools to the Auburn campus each fall. The event is designed to give participants an opportunity to investigate the exceptional educational opportunities, numerous career options, and diverse services Auburn University offers its students. Participants meet COSAM and Auburn University administrators, faculty, professional advising staff, and students in a small setting and obtain information about the undergraduate admissions process, scholarship opportunities, financial aid options, academic programs, and academic and social support provided by Auburn. Potential students also learn about the sciences and mathematics disciplines, including pre-health programs, and meet COSAM faculty, staff, and students who play an important role in creating the student-friendly atmosphere offered by the college. Various student organizations are also highlighted, and the event culminates with a guided campus tour. Retention: Retention strategies in COSAM’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs include increased utilization of tutoring, ment
