Joseph Brant Hospital
recognized for improvements
to Emergency Department
There are thousands of people cared for in our Emergency
Department (ED) every year and JBH knows how
important it is to move patients to the best place in our
hospital to receive their care as soon as they can. This
movement of patients has become a top priority in the
hospital, as previously patients were waiting too many
hours for an inpatient bed to become available. This year,
the hospital examined how we care for our patients in the
ED, looking for improvements in wait times and getting
patients to the right bed faster.
provincial targets.
JBH implemented a new model of care in the ED. Since
adopting the new model, the hospital has seen a monthover-month improvement in bringing it within reach of
The Hospital would like to recognize and thank all staff,
physicians for their hard work and ongoing efforts to
improve processes and the quality of care at JBH.
In July 2016, JBH received special commendation from
the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) for
outstanding Emergency Department (ED) performance.
Through resourcefulness, adaptability, and collaboration,
JBH has shown the greatest progress in the 90th percentile
ED Length of Stay (LOS) for all patients within the
Medium-Volume Hospital Group; improving a remarkable
18.6 percent between 2014 and 2015.
OUR NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
In September 2017, the Emergency Department will
relocate to the main level of the new patient tower, with
a dedicated entrance from the outdoors. The new ED is
being built to optimize patient and family-focused care,
patient and staff workflow, safety, infection prevention
and control, state-of-the-art technology and programs to
reduce stays, avoid admissions and improve diagnosis and
outcomes. There is a dedicated ambulance garage that will
house up to six ambulances at a time. Highlights inside
the ED include a new paired triage registration station.
In our current hospital, a patient moves from triage to
registration when arriving at the ED. In the new ED, triage
and registration will be combined at one station so that a
patient is medically assessed and registered at one time.
The new ED will have 35 Emergency Exam Rooms. These
individual rooms are efficient,
modern and allow for added
privacy and confidentiality.
There are also three Trauma
Rooms that are large, bright
and incorporate the latest
technological advancements.
All of the rooms meet
high infection prevention
standards. The Emergency

unit will have direct access
to inpatient mental health,
the paediatric inpatient unit, and other focused care. The
new ED will create an exceptional environment to receive
patient care.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES
JBH is building our new hospital to incorporate sophisticated technologies to support excellent
patient care. A dedicated team is working to select these technologies and develop the processes
for their use which will be gradually implemented in stages once the new tower opens in 2017.
New technologies include a new nurse call bell system to enhance quick communication between
patients and providers by integrating hospital systems with bedside and handheld devices; a Real
Time Locating System to enable users to locate staff and patients and link equipment with asset
management; a Telemetry and Patient Monitoring system to integrate the information on patient
medical devices with care providers’ devices; a Portering and Housekeeping system to streamline
communication from unit staff to support services; a Security system to improve communication
to security staff.
