“Being able to provide care for patients when they need it and making them feel safe is something that we are striving to achieve every day in this department.” A new home for the Emergency Department When Joseph Brant Hospital opened the doors to the Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower, it not only marked the beginning of a new building, but also the beginning of a new era in healthcare for Burlington. And for many people, a visit to the hospital often starts with the Emergency Department. One of the features of the new patient tower is a purpose built Emergency Department (ED), made possible in part thanks to donors. DR. JOE CHERIAN, CENTRE, AND ED STAFF SETTLE IN TO THEIR NEW SPACE. For Dr. Joe Cherian, Chief of Emergency Medicine at JBH, the space is a new beginning for his department. For Dr. Cherian, the new patient tower opening was a culmination of years of work that began with floor plans and providing feedback to plan and build the new space based on patient flow. “Having a quality, efficient Emergency Department is important for me, and the hospital,” he said. “Being able to provide care for patients when they need it and making them feel safe is something that we are striving to achieve every day in this department.” 8 Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation Within the new space, JBH has been able to provide a smoother patient journey. Right from triage, patients are assessed and divided within the department based on acuity. The Assessment and Reassessment Management (ARM) area allows 80-85 percent of patients to flow through quickly. Along with updated technology and increased space including more private exam rooms, the new space has in the department, and the changes are being noticed. provided Dr. Cherian and the team an o pportunity to evaluate and enhance their processes to create efficiencies and improve patient care. Dr. Cherian and the ED team utilize a PDSA cycle - Plan, Do, Study, Adjust - that provides opportunities for continuous improvement within the department. Changes have already been made, redesigning patient flow which has led to a significant culture change THERE ARE MORE INDIVIDUAL BAYS, WITH DOORS THAT CLOSE PROVIDING INCREASED PRIVACY FOR OUR PATIENTS. For the second year in a row, JBH has been recognized by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for outstanding performance improvement. Our hospital has shown the greatest improvement in the 90th percentile ED Length of Stay (LOS) for all patients within the Medium- Volume Community Hospital Group compared to the previous year. And although there are always challenges due to the nature of emergency medicine, with the increased space and staffing levels, wait times continue to decrease. “Everything our donors do helps us further improve care,” said Dr. Cherian. “Better equipment, better space, increased staffing so that we can provide the care that the Burlington community deserves and expects.” Donor Report 2016-2017 9
