LÍNGUAS Choosing a career path C hoosing a career path is not that simple as people may think it is. Sometimes, a wrong decision can change all your life. First of all, after elementary school, you have to choose a course to fol- low when you are 14, which is quite dangerous because most teenagers still haven’t got enough maturity to realize how school decisions have an importance in their future. Furthermore, most school teenagers regret the choice they made and thus don’t want to have jobs related to their course. However, nowadays, having a job requires a lot of skills and qualifications. But having a job is not all about working, but also reaching goals. I won’t lie, secondary school demands a lot of yourself and you must study, but I believe that people who are motivated, creative, humble, hardworking and intelligent can easily get a job and achieve success in life. It will be easier to choose a career path if you get informed about all possible jobs that you see yourself doing in the future. After that, you should not only make a list of skills that you have, but also live experi- ences related to what you want to do. To sum up, it’s important to be aware of your decisions and listen to your heart but also your brain! C hoosing a career path might be the most difficult decision in our life. It’s hard to choose what we want to do with our li- ves, what path to take. To make that choice we need good counselling and being informed about all the options that we have. We need to have a lot of things in consideration, such as the salary and the employability rate. Those two aspects are very important because if, for example, you want to build a family, a good salary is essential and, of course, the employability will assure you to have a job doing what you pursued. It’s very important to have a perspective from other people about some of the degrees available. I have talked with my brother and some of his friends about the degrees that they are taking and it helped me with some questions that I had, such as :“What am I more into? What don’t I really want to do?” Making decisions is very hard and we need to put our brain and heart working together. We might not love what we choose but, by the time we start working, we must love it. Inês Pereira, 11.ºC2 C hoosing a career path is very important because it basically dictates how our lives are going to be. Before choosing a career it is necessary to have ended at least high school, but generally a degree is essential. After that the main thing to know is what kind of job you want, having in mind what schedule do you prefer and if it’s chal- lenging, because if it is, you have to be ready to work really hard, it takes a lot of effort, physical and emo- tional, to be good in what you want to follow and to become the best in what you do. In my opinion having a good and fulfilling job is half way to a good life, but to reach it, there are going to be many challenges and bumps in the road. Even so, with strength and will I’m sure anyone can choose a successful and good career path.
