A week at Ballymaloe Cookery School Por Tomás Bravo, 11.ºB T he more languages you know, the more you are a person. Languages are deeply entangled within the world’s culture: they dictate and reflect the most primordial need of a certain nation and allow us to see how they developed the answer to such need. Of course, being aware of our earthly culture is a matter of choice; however, it should be our personal aim as Earth’s inhabitants to value and have a deeper knowledge of the legacy our History has left us. We often gaze on the Past to remember ourselves of the mistakes our forefathers made or fought against, forgetting that humankind was also capable of marvellous progress and understanding, and all based on ways only communication can provide. In order to honour such a legacy, we should learn other languages: who knows how further we can reach following the paths of speech and communication. 10.º E L ast August I went to Ireland for a week to attend a course at Ballymaloe Cookery School, Organic Farm & Gardens in Shanoon, in the district of Cork. My main goals were to expand my knowledge in cookery and improve my communication skills in English. The school is placed near the sea and it is the only cookery school in the world located in the middle of 100 acre organic farm. I stayed in a cottage with about eight rooms and a kitchen. The course consisted in demonstrations and activities. Firstly, every morning we had some demonstrations made by the cooks, they showed us how to cook dishes with vegetables, fruit and all the organic products of the farm. Then, it was our turn to practise and make the dishes we had learnt. We learnt how to make cheese, we had guided visits to the farm and we went fishing. It was a wonderful experience because I enriched my English and expanded my knowledge in my favourite activity – cooking. I also had the opportunity to socialize with people from all over the world and I was even invited to have dinner with the owners of the school, who were lovely. I liked it so much that I wouldn’t mind repeating the experience. Página 15 Atividades de escrita orientadas pela professora de Inglês, Margarida Beato D
