Where does the custom come from?
The legend says that shortly after the foundation of Rome, the Romans realized that they needed to populate the city. Thus they organized a party where they invited the Sabine tribe, known for their beautiful women. At the end of the party, the Romans kidnapped the beautiful women.
When they woke up the Sabine men tried to save them, but the women refused to return home because they had fallen in love with the Romans. It seems that this myth has given birth to the tradition of bride kidnapping that has remained in time till now.
