The Parable of the
Beggar
A beggar had been sitting
on a box by the side of the
road for twenty years. On
this beautiful day, a
stranger walked by the
beggar and in a soft tone
the beggar said, “Spare
some change?” holding
out his hand. The stranger
replied, “I have nothing
for you.” He then asked
the beggar, “What in the
world are you sitting on?”
The beggar replied,
“Nothing, just an old box.”
But he could not remember how long he had been
sitting on the box. The
stranger further asked,
“Have you ever looked inside the box?” “No,” said
the beggar. “What’s the
point?” he asked.
“There’s nothing in it.”
The stranger insisted that
the beggar look inside the
box. The beggar reluctantly managed to pry
open the box lid. With
disbelief, and astonishment, the beggar saw that
the box was filled with
gold.
