Thursday 22nd November
Visit to the nearby private primary school Sukromná Základna Skola inZilina, invited by her
principal (Lenka Brodnanová)
We meet the headmistress at 7:30 and she tells us that in the same building there are three
private institutions (a kindergarden, the primary school and a highschool). Timetable, lesson
length, breaks, etc. are exactly the same as highschools. We will observe 8th and 9th year
students (equivalent to our 2nd and 3rd Secondary students back home). The SZS was the
first primary school in Slovakia to apply CLIL methodology.
8:00 8th Level Maths
The class is conducted in English, so the teacher is also dealing with vocabulary. Syllabus is
in Slovak, as 4th and 9th year students have to take general exams in Slovak, but the class
is conducted in FL. Students solve problems on the blackboard and there’s pairwork. She
provides scaffolding so students can understand the lecture. She only resorts to Slovak when
there are comprehension issues.
