Seymour Johnson AFB is home to one of the mo the world , the 4th Fighter Wing ( FW ). When World War II ended , Seymour Johnson Fie station for training troops before reassignment a USAF closed Seymour Johnson Field in May 1946 Engineers began reconstruction of the Field in la April 1 , 1956 , as Seymour Johnson AFB . 3.3 Base History
Seymour Johnson AFB The City of Goldsboro developed the airport in 1941 prior to Seymour Johnson becoming a part of the United States Air Force ( USAF ). The airport was named Seymour Johnson Field in honor of Lieutenant Seymour Johnson , a Navy pilot ; thus making Seymour Johnson AFB the only US AFB in the world to be named after a US Navy pilot .
Originally , the 83rd Fighter‐Day Wing was assign as the primary unit ; however , by December 1957 was replaced by 4th FW .
Three other units have been assigned to Seymou USAF 916th Air Refueling Wing , 414th Fighter Gr Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational R are discussed under the Mission section below .
