• The Orlando metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is the
third largest in the state and the fastest growing MSA
among Florida’s four largest population centers. This
strong growth has help propel the State of Florida to
the third most populous state in the nation, behind only
California and Texas.
• The Orlando MSA grew nearly 9.0 percent between
2010 and 2015 to 2.3 million residents. In line with
Florida trends, 28.0 percent of that growth came
among senior citizens; however, 28.0 percent of the
growth occurred within the 25 to 39 year old cohort –
the heart of a any area’s workforce.
• Going forward, Orlando’s population growth is
expected to outpace the nation as a whole, growing
nearly 2.0 percent annually through 2030. Within
the metro, Osceola County is projected to have the
strongest growth at 2.8 percent annually; however,
nearly 55.0 percent of all growth within the MSA is
expected to occur within Orange County.
• In the short-term, downtown Orlando, with its robust
development pipeline, is expected to outpace the
region as a whole. With 4,800 units currently under
construction or proposed within downtown, it is
expected that the population downtown will increase
2.8 percent annually over the next five years, far
outpacing the strong 2.3 percent annual growth of the
overall metro area.
