ENDINGS... The DIY lollies have got to be one of the easiest, yet most impressive, summertime desserts. It wows my guests every time. WATERMELON POPSICLES Take a couple of bananas and split length-wise down the middle with the bottom peel left un-ruptured. Push a couple of blocks of chocolate into the flesh. Wrap the bananas tightly in tin foil and place on the braai until the peel is dark brown in colour. Unwrap the fruit carefully and serve with parev ice-cream. Lindt 70% and up is kosher parev when manufactured in France. BRAAIED LINDT BANANAS DIY FRUIT LOLLIES: You can slice any fruit, but what I find works best is kiwi, strawberries and halved grapes. These make for a great side profile when freezing. You can also add some fresh mint leaves. I always use a clear pale juice like pineapple or lemonade flavour (FreshFellas or Sir Juice), as this ensures you can actually see the fruit segments. You don’t need a lot of juice; once the lolly holder is packed with the fruit, it doesn’t leave much room for the liquid. It really just fills the gaps and works as a binding agent. Serve on a bed of crushed ice. References: www.tastemag.co.za; www.braai.com; www.food-blog.co.za 54 JEWISH LIFE ISSUE 79 PHOTOGRAPHS: BIGSTOCKPHOTO.COM Sweet
