This also gives a fuller meaning to the term given for the exodus: Yetzias Mitzrayim. This literally means “the exit of Egypt”, but if we take into consideration what we learned from the Vilna Gaon, there were really 50 mini-exoduses, so how can we call one day the actual exit from Egypt? But the answer is clear now. That first day of Pesach was a full yetzia, a full exit, where we experienced a quality of life that was as far away from Mitzrayim as humanly possible. That, however, was just a once-off taste of perfection. The 50 miniyetzias started after that initial illumination. Then began our turn to work and strive to achieve what we saw was possible. This concept is also visible on an individual basis, as each one of us embarks on a new avenue of serving Hashem. When we start off on a new path or endeavour, in those early stages we are given the strength to carry ourselves along that path for a long time. Often the initial feeling is excitement, enjoyment, or satis- OFTEN THE INITIAL FEELING IS EXCITEMENT, ENJOYMENT, OR SATISFACTION, BUT SOON THEREAFTER THOSE FEELINGS DIE DOWN AND, IN ORDER TO KEEP ON GOING, WE ARE EXPECTED TO REMEMBER HOW IT USED TO FEEL, TO MOTIVATE US UNTIL WE FINALLY ARRIVE AT A STAGE WHERE WE FEEL THAT EXCITEMENT AND ENJOYMENT ALL THE TIME. faction, but soon thereafter those feelings die down and, in order to keep on going, we are expected to remember how it used to feel, to motivate us until we finally arrive at a stage where we feel that excitement and enjoyment all the time. That is hard, but that is how we achieve success. Chazal tell us (Shemos Rabah 19:6) that while our exodus from Egypt was through chipazon, our future redemption will not be done that way, as it says in Yishaya (52:12): “But you will not leave in haste (chipazon) or go in flight”. Perhaps, with this new understanding, we can explain that while we were given a sneak peak on the first day of Pesach to help sustain us through our slow process of perfection RE: THE LATE DANIEL COPANS The family of the Late Daniel Copans would like to express their grateful thanks and appreciation to all persons who graciously donated funds towards the considerable medical costs incurred as a consequence of Daniel’s condition. The funds were paid into an account administered under our control, and were utilised and applied as and when required. As a consequence of Daniel’s premature death, it became unnecessary to utilise all the funds, and we are in a position to refund donors with a pro-rata share of the balance. A suggestion has been made by certain donors that the funds be donated to either a cancer-related charity, or apply the funds to establish a Foundation in memory of Daniel. This Foundation would assist desperately ill children with medical costs in the case of life threatening conditions. As certain of the donations were made anonymously, we appeal to all persons or institutions who made donations, to contact us, in confidence, with instructions as to how you would prefer your share of the refund to be applied. It will be the final event, the one we all hope for. We all need to appreciate that on the holy day of Pesach, we are given the spiritual fuel to help us through the next 50 days of avodah, till we reach the peak of Har Sinai, and the peak of our perfection. The more we plug into the Source of holiness on that first day of Pesach, the day of our full exodus experience, the more equipped we are to achieve the most magnificent results in the days that follow.
