Remembering OUR TEACHERS “Morah Rebecca, as she is fondly known, is not just a principal; she is your friend, confidante and cheerleader. Morah inspires each and and every girl that walks through the gates of her school, not just with the love for Torah and learning but, more importantly, for the love of one’s self and to do the best and achieve the best that you can. She inspires each girl to go out there and reach for the stars.” HAYLEY SEVITZ: I remember... my teacher from Hebrew Academy in Cape Town. “My middle school teacher is the reason I became one myself. She had this ability to relate to each of us on an individual scale and would even put up with the teenage antics we would of course come up with to get out of class.” really the only teacher who did. She always gave me positive input and I even remember her taking me out of class to speak privately to me and tell me that I was capable of achieving and doing well. She really cared about me.” ROBERT SUSSMAN: I remember... Dr John Paynter from the University of Dallas “He somehow always saw a greater potential in me than I recognised in myself – and, even more amazingly, knew just how to draw it out of me and actualise it. He never accepted anything but my best work. Perhaps more than anything, I remember how he stood up for me, the only Jew at a private non-Jewish university, at great personal cost when other professors treated me unfairly on account of my religion.” JL NO.1 I ED NI “I was told at my previous school that I’d never be more than a C student in English. Mrs Cohen wouldn’t give up on me and made me write and rewrite and rewrite again until finally in matric I got 94% for my final matric result. I went on to study English literature at Wits, thanks to a teacher who saw my potential and believed in what she saw and never gave up on me.” ROS MINTZ: I remember... Francis Sive from Yeshiva College “The late Francis Sive of Yeshiva College had a huge impact on my late daughter’s life. Lisa Cohen nee Mintz was a very shy girl until she got to grade 8 when Mrs Sive insisted she do public speaking. She saw huge potential in her that nobody else did. From then on she became a very eloquent speaker and a very confident person who went on to study journalism and had no problems approaching people for interviews, etc.” ANONYMOUS: I remember... Mrs Bacher from Torah Academy Girls High School “She always believed in me – and, at that time in my life, she was Hebrew University and The Rothberg International School offers: Ulpan Mechina Undergraduate degrees Masters degrees Semester Courses Student Exchange programmes And more … South African Friends of the Hebrew University Contact Carmel Krawitz: Email: [email protected] Web - www.safhu.co.za Tel: 011 645 25 06 SR A E L ANDY HAEFNER: I remember...
