KING DAVID SCHOOLS SLEEP-OUT Inspired by the 702 Sun International CEO Sleep-Out, King David Schools hosted a King David Sleep-Out Under the Stars on Thursday 18 June, the aim of which was to collect blankets for Girls and Boys Town. Grade 7 students, teachers and principals at King David Linksfield and Victory Park Primary Schools, as well as Rabbi Craig Kacev, director of the South African Board of Jewish Education, experienced a freezing Johannesburg winter’s night by sleeping outside, and braving the elements. GREAT PARK YOUTH SHARE THE WARMTH WITH AFRIKA TIKKUN Great Park barmitzvah and batmitzvah boys and girls were joined by a large group of grade 7 King David Linksfield students to share the cheer, warmth and privilege of giving. Hundreds of blankets and coats were given to the Uthandu Nursery School children and will be further distributed to hundreds more who are in the care of Afrika Tikkun’s Cradle to Career programmes. CAP’S MANDELA DAY INITIATIVE RABBI’S CONFRONT ABUSE The South African Rabbinical Association (SARA) in conjunction with Koleinu SA ran a two-hour briefing on the issue of sexual abuse. To inform the rabbis on this matter, Koleinu SA brought out Dayan Rabbi Avrohom Union of the Beth Din of Los Angeles, California, who has had extensive experience in dealing with such matters. After highlighting the extent of the problem as well as the lifelong harm such issues cause, Rabbi Union provided guidelines as to the halachic duties and responsibilities of those who become aware of such instances. CAP’s Mandela Day Initiative called on the Joburg community to make 67 000 sandwiches, and was a huge success. The Norwood Park on Grant Ave was filled with young and old, from 7am to 2pm on the Friday before Mandela Day. Forty-thousand sandwiches were counted; however, boxes filled with ready-made sandwiches kept arriving long after the counting! CAP distributed the sandwiches to soup kitchens, homeless shelters, orphanages and other charities across Johannesburg.
