From CAD Models to Castings - JH Jewellery Design invests in a 3D printing solution that really delivers for jewellers

We caught up with JOE HARTLEY who shared how he has now achieved great results after years of struggle with 3D printing jewellery . After a rocky start , he now has a system which is fast and reliable , a fantastic step forward for his business and his customers

Joe ’ s background in jewellery manufacturing led him onto starting his own successful business providing CAD / CAM solutions for bespoke jewellery . After spending two years working for a high-volume jewellery manufacturer , Joe gained valuable skills in CAD and the maintenance and preparation of Multi-jet , FDM and DLP 3D printers . Working closely with goldsmiths , stone setters and a casting team , he learnt a great deal about the manufacturing process of jewellery . This led to the creation of Joseph Hartley Jewellery Design , and through a lot of hard work he now has a steady array of clients , which is continuing to grow .

Part of the process of growing his business included looking at 3D printing to enable him to introduce a secondary product to his range . As a new business , finances were limited and so he first looked at a low cost entry level DLP machine . Promising quick and accurate results it sounded too good to be true , and unfortunately it was . As the branded resins were not up to standard , he had to purchase from a third party and they were not 100 % stable and did not always produce accurate results . This along with many other factors led Joe to look elsewhere for his printing needs . As a jewellery manufacturer , the resin used needed to be completely
castable and this was not working out .
After lengthy research into a suitable replacement , Joe went back to what he had learnt previously with a popular brand of Multi-jet machines , due to the familiarity with the product he debated whether this would be the best route to go down . However , after consideration and vivid flashbacks of the slow , noisy and unreliable encounters with these machines he decided this was not the way forward . What Joe needed was fast , high quality turnaround , enabling him to provide shorter lead times for his customers . Thanks to experience , he knew this was not something the Multi-jet machine could help him with .
Eventually Joe found G3D , a UK based company that provides an ‘ all in one ’ CAD to CAST solution to 3D printing . As engineers and manufacturers of investment powder , resin and 3D printers , the results gained are much more reliable as the materials are especially developed to work together .
G3D have decades of manufacturing knowledge and experience , offering a range of Rapid Prototyping machines and materials which together provide improved results compared to any other application . This is not something any other system can offer , putting G3D at the top of their game . For Joe , the decision to go ahead with G3D was
made simple by the fact that they have UK based support and proven results in what they do .
“ I ’ m very pleased with the RP100 although it weighs a ton ,” he says . “ It ’ s an all-in-one machine that ’ s incredibly reliable and there are multiple castable resins available from G3D , which are compatible with investment powder . Also the printer comes with a curing unit and cleaning station as standard , complete with tools , and has multiple layer thickness settings . The icing on the cake is the excellent post-installation support , so you ’ ve got all the help you need on hand . For me the G3D RP100 is the jewellery industry standard for 3D printing and I ’ d recommend it to anyone .”
Joe ’ s business can now continue to flourish , and he can rest assured that he will continue to get the support he needs from G3D to carry on producing accurate results with an incredibly reliable , all in one machine . G3D certainly look set to disrupt the status quo of 3D printing in jewellery , watch this space !
