We caught up with
who, having recently purchased
and installed a G3D RP100 Rapid Prototype machine, have added to
their bespoke service and their own jewellery range.
Avanti Jewellers Ltd,based in Ashbourne Derbyshire, was founded in 1982 by brothers Alan
and David Matkin. Being traditional jewellery manuafacturers for over 30 years, they have
acquired a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the industry. As part of their manufacturing
process, they were using a Reevo 540C milling machine. And whilst adequate for the job it
was intended for, it was clear that the capabilites and efficiency were falling short of today’s
requirements and it was time for an upgrade . At a time where using new technology means
keeping up with the industry, their milling machine was not sufficient to their needs and
Avanti embraced Rapid Prototyping. The next challenge was to find a 3D printer that would be
both affordable and user-friendly but with a high quality print and fast print turnaround.
After researching the market, several 3D printer brands and visiting the IJL show in September
2017, Avanti found that the G3D RP100, a DLP resin printer manufactured by the global
leaders of investment powders Goodwin Refractory Services Ltd, offered the best value for
money. The RP100 can produce 40 high resolution rings at a time with minimal supports and
minimal resin waste. The overall package of high resolution, good value and a good print area
as well as the company being based locally which would offer continuous and fast customer
support was what really convinced Alan and his team the RP100 was the best solution for
them. Avanti’s advice to anyone thinking about 3D printing is to fully understand the process
before committing to it. The process from CAD to CAST is very involved and should be
thought through in terms of CAD software and designer. However, following the installation
and training, which is included in the overall package offered by G3D, the results have been
extremely successful and the printer is proving reliable, consistent and easy to use.
