Relating to the theme of the 2017 JEMUN ‘Sustainable and Accessible Tourism’, delegates, in meeting room 4. representing Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean have discussed about ‘Sustainable Tourism in the Caribbean Island Nation-States’ by utilizing LEGO bricks as a communication tool.

The delegate from Belize, Mr. Keisuke Maeda explained his definition of Sustainable Tourism in Caribbean. He said: “For Belize, where you can enjoy real nature, it is important to conserve nature and it should be a definition of sustainable tourism”. Since Belize depends on tourism industry a lot for its revenue in the national finance, keeping nature beautiful is necessary to promote and keep tourism industry.

Jamaica, which has a huge dependency on tourism industry, is also facing garbage problem. Ms. Iroha Nozato, the delegate from Jamaica explained the garbage related problems in Jamaica. According to her, Jamaica does not have any incineration plant. Thus, all garbage goes to final disposal spaces on the island and sometimes causes health hazards for local residents.

In 17th century, pirates traveled to the Caribbean Sea to find a pirate king’s treasure sleeping in the sea bed. In the 21st century, we sail ships to the Caribbean Sea to gather garbage. Since when did we start to look for garbage instead of treasure?
