Castle by the
seashore
Moraira’s unusual fortress
stands just 10 metres high on a
rock by l’Ampella beach in the
centre of town. It seems hard to
believe that its main task was to
protect the coast from pirates.
Cannons were mounted on
the roof while slits in the castle
walls provided a defence for
the men on lookout. The 18th
century fortress has two floors
and three wings.
Over the door is the Bourbon
coat of arms. This powerful
family ruled Spain when the
castle was completed in 1742.
