Wildfire season starts
Two major wildfires in Spain
hit the news last month: one
in the Doñana Natural Park, in
Andalucia where 2,000 residents
were evacuated. Two holiday
parks, the Parador Nacional State-
run hotel and the El Arenosillo
Army barracks had to be emptied
and their occupants were forced
to flee for their own safety.
The second fire, in the Sierra
Calderon nature reserve spanning
Valencian and Castellón provincial
borders, wiped out 500 hectares
forced hundreds of evacuations
and blocked the A-23 Valencia-
Zaragoza-Huesca motorway. A
country house in Segorbe and
several farms in Soneja, both
in Castellón, were evacuated
as flames raged out of control
between Gàtova (Valencia) and
Altura (Castellón). The fire is
believed to have been started by a
lightning strike. see .ThinkSpain
