So, on the hottest days, and the most
humid of times, it is possible that
some of the weaker UK TV signals
can be lost.
Another issue is insects, in particular
for people with the large 1.8m and
2.4m satellite dishes.
Usually, these satellite dishes use a
type of LNB and feedhorn that allows
insects to “climb” inside. If you are
unlucky you can get a wasps nest in
there!
You can try and remove the insects
yourself, but be very very careful.
The LNB has three reception “pins”
inside, and if these are damaged, then
you will need a new LNB. So don’t just
ram a screwdriver up inside the LNB
and since the LNB is a very sensitive
piece of kit, don’t spray any liquid
inside. Once the obstruction has been
cleared, you can prevent other insects
from residing in the LNB by placing a
cap or blocker over the open hole of
the LNB.
The best I have found is using some
packing polystyrene, about the
thickness of a 1euro coin, cut to fit
snugly over the hole. It lets the signals
through, but stops insects.
But the power of the sun can destroy
this cap, so it is a good idea to check
the cap, and replace it for a new one,
after each summer.
Until next time, happy viewing.
