Embryos , Oocytes and Semen Permits
A “ MUST ” read for mare and stallion owners !
Embryos , Oocytes and Semen Permits
With the new and ever changing breeding techniques , genetic breeding advancement and mares and stallions sold with retained breeding rights , the AQHA is required to keep abreast of what is happening and to supply the members with the information that they may require if they travel down the path of Embryos , Oocytes and Semen Permits .
Oocyte – is an unfertilised egg .
NB : The owner of the oocyte at the time of fertilization will be the “ breeder ” of the resulting foal .
1 . If you own a mare and wish to flush oocytes from that mare , and freeze them for your own future use or to sell , you must apply to the AQHA for an Oocyte permit for every oocyte . Please note that if you sell this mare then you must disclose in the commercial contract that you have a certain number of frozen oocytes that you are retaining .
2 . If you are selling your mare and wish to retain an Oocyte from that mare for future use by you , please make sure that you have a commercial contract stating this and that it details how you will proceed to gain access to this oocyte when you are ready to do so . It would be advisable for you , as the mare owner , to apply for an Oocyte permit before final sale date .
3 . If you have already sold your mare , and have a commercial contract that states you have retained an Oocyte for breeding in the future , and you did not apply for an Oocyte permit prior to sale , you will need to contact the AQHA Office and a Breeders Declaration will be sent to you that must be filled out , signed by yourself and the current registered owner of the mare and returned to the AQHA office for processing .
Embryo frozen – a fertilised oocyte NB : The “ breeder ” for a resulting foal from a frozen embryo will be the owner of the mare at the time the embryos were flushed .
1 . If you own a mare and wish to flush embryos from that mare and freeze them for future use or to sell , then the stallion owner , on their breeding returns , will state in the Service Type column that it is a FE .
2 . The Association will produce a Frozen Embryo Permit that will be sent to the stallion owner for signing . The stallion owner will forward this permit to the owner of the frozen embryo .
3 . The owner of the Frozen Embryo Permit , once the embryo has been implanted into a recipient mare , will finalise the details on the Permit and send to the Association Office with the applicable fee . A registration application for the resulting foal will be sent to the owner of the Permit .
4 . If you sell this mare then you must disclose in the commercial contract the number of Frozen Embryo Permits that you are retaining .
5 . If you sell the frozen embryos then you must complete the transfer part of the Embryo Permit and send to the Association .
Live Embryo transfer Is when an embryo is flushed and then placed into a recipient mare .
This does not require an Embryo permit as this will be recorded on the stallion owners breeding return as a ET and a registration application will be sent to stallion owner who will sign and forward to the mare owner .
Stallion Owners and Frozen Embryos Please note that when you are lodging a breeding return to the Association and you have been informed that the mare owner has frozen the embryos from the service to your stallion , you must tick the ET on the breeding return and write the word FROZEN next to the mare ’ s name .
Semen Permits 1 . If a stallion owner intends to sell their stallion , but retain the stallions frozen semen for future use , then prior to the sale of the stallion , the owner , must apply to the Association for Retained Semen Permits . ( 1 permit , 1 registration )
2 . Permits will not be available after the sale of the stallion to the last registered owner .
3 . The stallion owner also must make sure that the commercial contract of sale states that he , the current owner , has retained a certain number of Semen Permits .
Any forms required for any of the above are available on the AQHA web site under FORMS / REGISTRATION .
