Then it all changed one day when you were able to turn on your TV and suddenly there was Janet Jackson on your screen. You were copying her dance routines and her style as much as you could. It was all about looking and sounding just like your idol. She was in your living room singing and dancing and you felt like she was giving you your own personal concert. You would maybe fight with your parents or brothers and sisters because they wanted to change the channel, but OH NO this wasn’t gonna happen on your watch! You would stand your ground until you got your way. Soul Train, American Bandstand, Friday Night Videos, MTV; she was everywhere and you did your best to take it all in. Eventually you also had VH1 and BET as well.

Now when I was growing up, we didn’t have the ability to download and stream music. Here’s some Pop culture for you, it was all about cassette tapes and VHS tapes. Whenever anything important came on the radio you would pop in your cassette tape to record it. When something important was on the TV hmmm……Janet Jackson, you would frantically look for a VHS tape to pop in the recorder. Sometimes you would record over something that your parents were saving, but you figured you would pay the consequences later. It was all about being on a mission, a Janet Jackson mission to preserve as many of her performances and videos as you could.

DANCE----To move one’s body rhythmically usually to music.
