East Coast Swing Dancing East Coast Swing is a Rhythm Dance that has both six- and eight-beat patterns . The name East Coast Swing was coined initially to distinguish the dance from the street form and the new variant used in the competitive ballroom arena . While based on Lindy Hop , it does have clear distinctions . Come alone or with a partner , guaranteed to be jitterbugging in no time ! West Coast Swing Dancing NEW !! West Coast Swing is a par tner dance with roots in Lindy Hop . It is characterized by a distinctive elastic look that results from its basic extension-compression technique of par tner connection and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor . The dance allows for both par tners to improvise steps while dancing together , putting West Coast Swing in a shor t list of dances that put a premium on improvisation . Youth participants experience the challenge of hills and flats using various sitting and standing positions .
