Jammu Redefining J By Tamana Slathia AMMU has always been a hub for social, political and cultural activities in India. From playing an important part in formation of the republic and giving India its first prime-minister to producing acclaimed talent of the likes of K.L.Saigal, Manto and Padma Sachdev, Jammu had been in the news for all the right reasons. However, post witnessing a few traumatic decades, the new generation of Jammu have reclaimed their spot in the limelight and are going about painting a new picture of the city. Once known for giving bollywood its first superhit singer Mr. K.L.Saigal, the only torch-bearer of the legacy of music in the state was Mr. Bhajan Sopori of the Sopore gharana. Not anymore, as Amol Jaswal and Tanya Gupta have not only proved their mettle but we will not be surprised if Bollywood playback singing beckons the young guns soon. Speaking of bollywood, Jammu has no dearth of artistes who have contributed to the film and television industry immensely. While Mohit Raina enticed the whole country by his 'Mahadev' act, Vidyut Jamwal has carved a niche for himself in the industry as a contemporary action hero. Not just that, Jammu's very own Balwant Thakur and his theatre group 'Natrang' has taken the actors places, with plays such as 'Ghumayee' getting national as well as international acclaim. At the same time, there are several up and coming music bands like 'The Roving Sikhs' and 'Rudram', a multi genre band, which are like a breath of fresh air to the stale campus scene.
