FALL 2017 MAKING A GIFT WITH APPRECIATED SECURITIES With the holidays and year-end quickly approaching, now would be a good time to consider an alternative to a cash charitable donation. Donating appreciated stock is often an overlooked and tax-wise way to support Montpelier, a cause that is close to your heart. When you give appreciated securities to Montpelier, that you have owned for more than one year, you receive two significant tax benefits: - You are entitled to a federal and state income tax deduction for the current fair market value of the securities, regardless of their original cost. - You avoid federal and state capital gains taxes on any increase in the value of the securities for all of the years you owned them—taxes you would pay REPORT OF GIFTS The Montpelier Foundation proudly recognizes those who generously made gifts or pledges between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017. Thank you. THE MADISON CABINET President’s Council | $25,000 & over Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Ader—  The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation Dr. Melanie Biermann &   Mr. Martin Younker The Bryan Endowment Fund—in   memory of Joseph Bryan and with   gratitude for the First Amendment. Center For Civic Education The Charles Fund, Inc. Claude Moore Charitable Foundation Commonwealth of Virginia Mary Laub Cowan Estate of Walter W. Craigie Mrs. Berenice D. Craigie Mrs. Patricia M. Dunnington—  The Seth Sprague Educational & Charitable Foundation Mr. and Mrs. Franklin S. Edmonds Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Erdman—  The Joseph and Robert Cornell if you sold the stock, which might exceed 20 percent. Be sure to discuss this gift strategy with your tax professional prior to making a gift so that you are certain of the benefits in your particular situation. Also, allow enough time to make the gift before the end of the year. A gift of electronically transferred appreciated securities is completed for income tax purposes only when it is received by the charity—not when you ask your broker to implement the transfer. To discuss making a bigger impact with your year-end gift to Montpelier by donating long-term appreciated securities, contact the Development Office at 540.672.2728. We will work with you to help fulfill your charitable goals.
