On the opening defensive series, the Jaguars
defense was seemingly going to be off the
field on a three-and-out. But at the end of
the third-down play, Jaguars linebacker Telvin
Smith threw Winston – his former Florida State
teammate – to the ground, drawing a personal
foul penalty that kept the drive alive. A later
third-down pass interference penalty against
Johnathan Cyprien furthered the Bucs’ opening
drive, but rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo missed
a 32-yard field goal to let the Jags off the hook.
The Jaguars coaching staff was also hit with a
pair of penalty flags for coming on to the field
of play, a point of emphasis for league officials
after last season’s playoff game between the
Bengals and Steelers.
“I told them in the locker room that all
adversity isn’t bad if we learn from it and we
respond the right way to it,” Bradley said after
the Bucs game. “We faced some adversity on
that with all the penalties, but we must respond
the right way. We must get these cleaned up.
I know they’re calling it close. I know they’re
making a point of emphasis and it’s good, we
need to have that.
“I’m glad they called it as close as they did,
and I think our players will respond to it. I’m
pleased with how they came out and showcased
the kind of style we want to play with – tight
coverage, guys made some plays and we played
physical.”
