MARCEDES LEWIS Celebrating Mother’s and Father’s Day together every year was a ritual for my mother and me. It started at a young age, when being the man of the house wasn’t a choice for me anymore. I remember as far back as three years old, peering out of my room and seeing my mother walk in the door from work and shortly after watching her boyfriend take his anger out on her, leaving bruises on her face and once with a broken jaw. Anytime he was skeptical of her whereabouts, his insecurities would kick in and my mother would be the one to pay for his irrationality.
