One More Piece is a short story written for IWACA.

M

y name is Victoria Weston, and I'm a jigsawholic.

At least, that's what Julie at work calls it. She likes to make fun of me about it and she wants me to go out with her to a club on Saturday, but I'm really much happier at home with a good, challenging jigsaw - one of the proper, half a centimetre thick wooden ones, not those flimsy things they sell in toy stores now. I've always been happier by myself, ever since Mummy dropped me off at Great Grandmama's and never came back. Great Grandmama had such a wonderful collection. She used to let me take one to my room after school. She'd select it,

hiding the box lid and just giving me the bag of heavy little pieces, so that the puzzle, when I completed it, was always a surprise :). When it was done (sometimes it would take me quite a few evenings) I was allowed down to her drawing room with my puzzle tray to show her and we would share squash and biscuits to celebrate.

I know, I know, it all sounds frightfully Pavlovian (my word this time, not Julie's, Julie wouldn't understand the reference), but I can't help it; I love jigsaws and most of all, I love solving them.

So, that's why this all started. Yet, as I sit here at my puzzle desk,
