Show your work, show it to as many people as you can. Farm their thoughts, making sure to cultivate honesty above all else. It may hurt when you hear that your characters are flat, or the narrative does not make sense. But it's the only way to get to grips with your story. Show them shorts of scenes. Show them the scribbled dialogue you thought of at three in the morning. There is no such thing as bad criticism.

Put these in to practice and you will soon have your own map to navigate by. A jumping point for narrative, characters, and dialogue. A personal almanac of your style.

Sebastian Flynn is 29 and a father of three. He writes when he has time, which isn't as often as he would like, except for when bed time rolls around.
