If in doubt, women are still the ones to lose out. According to the International Labour
Organisation (ILO), which conducted a study of 83 countries. Results have shown that in those
same countries women earn only a surprising percentage, 10%-30% less than men. While in the
US women earned only 77% of the male wage based on the results from 2010. In other places,
such as the sub-Saharan Africa and east Asia and the Pacific, there are young women between
the ages of 19 and 24 who are working for the earnings of only 82% and 84% of what the men in
their age group earn in an hour.
Although these kind of results are clearly specified in other countries, when it comes to the
Netherlands there is no clear defining factor since it is difficult to tell if Dutch men earn more
than women when their position and mobility on the labour market are taken into account
according to results taken from CBS of the year 2013.
As it can be concluded, the reason for the gender pay gap is mainly the existence of the
gender roles. Women are supposed to be at home; taking care of the children, cleaning and
cooking. Whereas men should be the ones who work hard for the living. Not until we break
with tradition and change our perception of the gender roles, we cannot change the inequality
that exists between men and women at the workplace and in society.
