Italian American Digest SPRING 2019 Elenian Day at the Races for Charity by Faith Peperone The Elenians celebrated another tradition, a Day at the Races, also known as a Run for Our Roses to fundraising for their charities of Magnolia Commu- nity Services and Wish to Fish Louisiana. All ages enjoyed coming to see the horses in the wonderful Black and Gold Room. The fourth race was named in honor of the Elenian Club. Dominante won the race. Elenian ladies of Italian descent continue our goal of keeping our Italian heritage alive by holding fun, family and local events that bring us together. CLUB NEWS Cefalù’s Palette of Spring by Rose Brocato Spring in Cefalu, Italy brings many colors to the surface for all to enjoy. The rich palette before your eyes wakes you up each morning. Cefalu is called the Pearl of the Mediterranean. Some pronounced colors of Sicily are blue for the color of the sea, gold for the beautiful beaches and green which is the color of countryside rich in olive trees. The beach in Cefalu is magnificent to say the least. There is a rainbow of colors for your eyes to feast on as you lay on the beach and breath in the salt air. Red is a favorite color in Cefalu which is one of the colors on the Italian flag but truly because of Cefalu’s unforgettable sunsets. When you experience a sunset in Cefalu for the first time, red will become one of your memorable colors especially during the spring season. I hope you are planning a trip to Cefalu soon to visit where our ancestors enjoyed the many colors of spring. On Saturday, February 16th, the Cefalutana Society, held it’s 2019 annual business meeting at the Italian Pie in Harahan, LA. The agenda for the meeting consisted of an election of officers for 2019. The officers voted in for this year are Joseph C. Battaglia, Presidente; David Matassa, Primo Vice-Presidente; Peter Lamanna, Sr., Second Vice-Presidente; Rose Brocato, Segretaria d’Archivista; Lisa Serio, Tesoriere; Sarah Ulmer, Segretaria do Finanza; John Provenza, Grande Marascalco; Erin Battaglia Thomas, PAGE 11 Corrispondenza; Joseph Taranto, Consigliere; Chris Marascalco Cummins, MD, Dottore; Fr. Michael Marascalco, Cappellano; Leonard Messina Gresens, Direttore; Chris Serio Barres, Direttore. Each officer gave their yearly report for 2018. Planning of 2019 events were discussed and voted on during the annual business meeting. There are many exciting events this year so please mark your calendars. On March 17, 2019 there will be a St. Joseph’s Altar at the Mother Cabrini Chapel in New Orleans. The Cefalutana Society’s annual “A Day at the Races” will be held at the New Orleans Fairgrounds on March 24, 2019. The Italian Festival in Kenner, LA will be held on April 5th through the 7th. The festival is held in Rivertown with great music and lots of Italian food. The Cefalutana Society will have a booth there again this year. The annual Festa in honor of Gesu Salvatore, Patrono do Cefalu, will be on August 4th. The society will again have it’s spaghetti dinner on October 19th at the KC hall in Kenner, LA. We are all looking forward to these times that we can spend together. Please remember to renew your yearly dues of $40 and mail that to our president, Joe Battaglia.
