ROLLINS / SCOTTS FLAT LAKES cont .
Lake .
“ We ’ ve had a little weather and the water temperature has declined so conditions for trout fishing have improved ,” related Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista . “ I ’ ve been trolling from my kayak with small Rapalas with limited success . Mainly I ’ ve caught smallish bass , but I ’ ve hooked a handful of trout too . On my last trip I trolled my way up the Bear River Arm pretty much to the headwaters . “
“ I didn ’ t hit anything but bass until I got way up the arm and then I got two trout . One was a small 9 inch rainbow and the other fish was a 12 inch brown trout . I know there are some big browns in the Bear River Arm ; it ’ s just a matter of spending enough time with lures in the water to get them to strike ,” he stated . At Scotts Flat there have been no reports of trout being caught , but Arnold Glass of Auburn visited the lake last week
Big rainbows have been the word for anglers fishing New Melones Reservoir this fall . This big trout was landed in late September .

I ended up landing 3 smallmouth bass to about 2 pounds . It was fun ,” exclaimed Glass .
SACRAMENTO AREA
Metro Salmon Action Is Still Tough
SACRAMENTO – Salmon fishing continues to be a grind in on the Sacramento River in the Capitol City , with the fishing proving tough for most anglers . “ The last two years have been pretty slow ,” said Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle ., “ but I ’ ve never seen it this slow in October . I don ’ t know if it ’ s the warm water , low flows or lack of fish , but it ’ s been tough , with a fish here and a fish there . Maybe the fish will arrive in October .”
“ One guy did report catching a 24 inch steelhead while fishing a roe-wrapped Kwikfish at the mouth fo the American ,” he added .
However , anglers are catching some quality salmon on the river . For example , four anglers landed four salmon to 22 pounds on a recent trip with Chris Ditter of Head Rush Sportfishing . They trolled with Brad ’ s Cut Plugs and Brad ’ s Killer Fish in the metropolitan area between Discovery Park and Freeport .
On the next day , an angler hooked and lost a big salmon on a trip with Ditter , but they didn ’ t land any fish .
“ The last two weeks have been pretty slow for me ,” said Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob ’ s Guide Service . “ On my last trip out , a woman caught an 8 lb . salmon while fishing with a Brad ’ s Killerfish in the jackpot color in the Sacramento area . We also had two other take downs .”
Likewise , salmon fishing in the stretch from Verona to the Interstate Five Bridge at Elkhorn is also slow , according to Mark Morrison of Mark ’ s Guide Service .
“ You know it ’ s slow when there are only 15 boat trailers in the parking lot at Verona this time of year ,” said Morrison .

SAN LUIS LAKE
Striper Action Bounces Up & Down
COYOTE – The striped bass bite has ranged from solid to slow during the past week at the main San Luis Reservoir as recent hot temperatures and dropping water levels may have affected the action . Interest in fishing at both the big lake and the O ’ Neill Forebay remain high as sales of jumbo minnows , jerkbaits , and topwater lures are is consistent .
Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill said , “ There were a few slower days at the main lake this past week , most likely due to the heat , but there are still stripers boiling in the mornings and late afternoons . Boils are taking place at the mouth of Portuguese Cove and along the left side of the cove in the flats . Jumbo minnow sales have been high , but it has been very hard to find Lucky Craft Pointer 128 ’ s . The larger grade of striper has been in the main lake . The rockwall and Trash Racks have been slower for boils .”
Jake Figgs of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis reported trollers have been scoring with P-Line Predator Minnows in pearl white laser / red head or firetiger . Atlas rig umbrella rigs loaded with Optimum ’ s Bad Bubba Shad swimbaits have also been working .

Channel Cats , Crappie Lead Fall Angling Parade
EL SOBRANTE – “ The trout bite is still pretty slow with the warm weather that we have been having ,” reported Marcella Shoemaker at the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ The channel catfish and crappie are your best bets at this time .”
For crappie , hang a red worm off a bobber in a shaded or covered area . For catfish , fish with chicken liver or anchovies on the bottom down at the
