RIO VISTA
Striper Action A Lot Better Than Salmon Fishing
RIO VISTA - James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service would normally be targeting river salmon in the metropolitan Sacramento area at this time of year , but with the slow action , he has opted to take his clients for striped bass in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers out of Brannan Island State Park .
Netzel said , “ We got pretty spoiled at the start of the week as we caught and released over 50 legal stripers on Monday , Tuesday , and Thursday , but the weekend was slower with the larger tides . We landed between 16 and 20 legal stripers on Sunday , and if we didn ’ t experience the ‘ lights out ’ action earlier in the week , I would have been ecstatic with Sunday ’ s count .
“ You have to be willing to move around as the stripers may be at 15 feet one drift , but they may move out to 30 feet on the following drift . I will be focusing upon striped bass until the salmon action picks up as I can ’ t take clients out for the possibility of one or two hookups per day .” ? The live mudsuckers have been out fishing the live minnows , and this is great because you can land multiple stripers on a dead mudsucker . In fact , they seem to work best when they have already caught a fish . Power-drifting is running the motor slightly faster than the current to give the appearance of a lively bait ,” said Netzel .
Striper fishing has slowed down at Liberty Island in the North Delta , but the black bass action was good on a trip there by Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience on Sunday , October 17 .
“ While fishing
with swimbaits for stripers , two anglers caught and released 12 largemouths to 2 pounds ,” said Paganelli .
However , the anglers didn ’ t hook any stripers that day . They were fishing in 2 to 3 feet of water .

REDDING / RED BLUFF
Salmon Scores Inch Up As More Fish Arrive
REDDING- There are decent numbers of salmon in the Sacramento River despite the lack of rain and high water temperatures .
Anglers fishing with Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue ’ s Guide Service have been scoring some very nice kings while fishing the Sacramento . Mike runs Flatfish early and then switches over to Pautzke cured roe as the morning goes on if his clients don ’ t already have limits .
Bogue ’ s clients have landed some jacks , but they ’ ve also scored some huge kings in the 25 to 30 pound class .
Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service is experiencing similar results while working a combination of roe and plugs .
While salmon are the focus on the Sacramento , the trout action has been outstanding for anglers working crickets , egg imitations and nymphs . The wild rainbows range from 12 to 20 inches .
If you want to fish the Sacramento River , both Robert Weese and Mike Bogue are top sticks when it comes to putting anglers on big bad kings and wild ‘ bows . To book a trip with Weese of Northern California Guide Service , give him a ring at ( 530 ) 755-7196 . To arrange a trip with Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue ’ s Guide Service reach out to Mike at ( 530 ) 246-8457 .
