Shore Anglers Nail Chinooks
SACRAMENTO – Shore anglers who put in the time are finding “ decent ” salmon fishing on the American River in the Sailor Bar and Sunrise areas , reported Craig Newton of Willfish Bait and Tackle . One local , Don , landed a 23 lb . salmon during a recent shore fishing adventure .
Boaters haven ’ t reported much success lately , but fishing should pick up for boaters using plugs and spinners in the lower river below Ancil Hoffman Park in coming weeks as more salmon make it up the river on their annual spawning journey . J . D . Richey of Richey ’ s Sportfishing

Steelhead are also worth a try , although most anglers are concentrating on salmon fishing . Most of the steelhead now are half pounders in the 12 to 18 inch range , with an occasional larger adult mixed in . Anglers can hook the fish while drifting soft beads , nightcrawlers and roe in the riffles .
Fishing pressure for stripers remains light . Some anglers continue to hook stripers in the lower American while throwing swim baits and Sneaky Petes early and late in the day .
During the day , you should find the top striper action while drifting live jumbo minnows , live crawfish and cut anchovies and sardines at Sailor Bar , Upper and Lower Sunrise , El Manto , Rossmoor Bar , River Bend Park , Gristmill , Watt Avenue , Howe Avenue and other locations .

Many of the facilities sustained extensive damage during the LNU Lightning Complex Fire and will not be fully operational until further notice . Continue to visit their websites for the most up-to-date information .
Reclamation-operated facilities will reopen beginning on October 24 ; South Oak Shores and Eticuera day use areas , Capell Cove boat launch , and Pope Bridge parking lot will reopen to visitors .
