Limit-Style Action On Tap For Lings & Rockfish
BERKELEY - While there are halibut and stripers available inside the bay and some big salmon are still being found outside , lingcod and rockfish are the main target at this time . Rockfish limits are the rule during bottom fishing trips , but anglers that work large baits close to the bottom are consistently getting lingcod to 20 plus pounds .
Captain James Smith of California Dawn Sportfishing has been putting his client on limits of lingcod while fishing the north coast from Point Reyes to Duxbury as well as the Farallon Islands . The average ling goes 8 pounds and the largest fish range up to 20 . Mooching live or frozen bait has
been the most consistently productive approach , but hardware and swimbaits are hooking fish too .
Inside the bay , Captain Jonathan Smith of Happy Hooker Sportfishing and Captain Chris Smith of Pacific Dream Sportfishing have been working the central bay for halibut and stripers with very good success when they are not chasing lingcod and rockfish outside the gate .

Charter Boat Anglers Score Rockfish , Lingcod and Salmon
BODEGA BAY - Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing has been putting together some phenomenal combination trips as he took out 24 veterans sponsored by the A to Z Foundation on Friday , October 9 for limits ( 48 ) to 19 pounds along with limits of assorted rockfish .
Powers said , “ It was flat glassy calm on the ocean with no wind , no swell , and no fog , and the air temperature was in the 70 to 75-degrees . The veterans were back at the dock by noon , and they left with sacks of fish 60 pounds plus .”
Wednesday ’ s trip was similar with 16 limits of lings to 22 pounds along with limits of rockfish . We picked up 6 salmon to 22 pounds .”
On a previous trip , Powers went south of the harbor on for 18 limits of assorted quality rockfish and 5 lingcod to 15 pounds before trolling for a few hours along Ten Mile Beach for 4 big salmon to 29 pounds . He said , “ One of our anglers when off the boat with a limit of salmon at 21 and 29 pounds , a lingcod , and a big limit of rockfish . If you want to get out for the chance at a big salmon , now is the time .”
Scott Marran , senior field scout and tuna specialist , said , “ No news is bad news , and there is no news of albacore out of Fort Bragg .”
