While salmon are the focus on the Sacramento , the trout action has been outstanding for anglers working crickets , egg imitations and nymphs . The wild rainbows range from 12 to 20 inches .

The water temperature was high , 74 to 75 degrees , where he was fishing , noted Paganelli .
Trollers are picking up good numbers of stripers on both the San Joaquin and Sacramento River sides of the Delta .
On his latest trip , Clyde Wands of Sacramento , accompanied by his wife , Bellra , reported catching two stripers weighing 10 and 8 pounds and two others measuring 21 inches each while trolling Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows . “ We caught the first fish on the San Joaquin and the rest on Broad Slough at Collinsville ,” said Wands .
Bank anglers are experiencing “ hit and miss ” striped bass action in Whiskey Slough and Empire Cut while bait fishing with threadfin shad , reported Richard Costa of H & R Bait in Stockton . Most of the fish range from keepers to 6 pounds , but some larger fish are also being caught .

orange fly almost immediately . This fish was clearly , clearly larger and put up a spirited fight . When I finally slid it into the net it turned out to be a handsome 16 inch rainbow . I release the second trout successfully and caught two more smaller rainbows in quick order .
After the first four trout , things slowed down . I ’ d like to say I rounded up some more fish , but that wasn ’ t the case . After a little more trolling , Lucy and I took a swim and headed home . The fishing hadn ’ t been red hot , but we ’ d beat the challenges of hot weather and a nearly full moon . I think we are in for some excellent fall fishing once the weather and water temperatures cool down .
About Leadcore
Getting depth is always a concern for trout anglers . Sure , topline trolling is highly effective when the water gets chilly , but there are still times when you ’ ll want to get down 20 or 30 feet . Of course , you can accomplish this with downriggers , but you can do it more simplistically with less hassle by employing one of my hybrid leadcore rigs . Here ’ s how my rigs are set up . A variety of fiberglass trout trolling rod will work for this rig , you just want one that isn ’ t
Krippled Anchovy & Krippled Herring Baitrigs overly stiff or overly soft … A medium to medium soft action with some backbone is what you ’ re looking for . The rod is matched with an Abu Garcia 5500 Line Counter reel . The reel is spooled with 200 yards of 20-pound braid , which is about the diameter of 4-pound mono . To the end of the braid I splice on 3 colors of leadcore . To the end of the leadcore I splice on 20 feet of 15 or 17-pound fluorocarbon tipped with a swivel . To the swivel , I attach a 3 to 4 foot 8 or 10-pound fluorocarbon leader . With this rig I put on a lure or bait and run out all the leadcore . Then I spool the braid backing off and keep track of how much line I ’ m putting out using the line counter . Depending on how much backing I have out and the speed of the troll , I can reach down to depths of 25 feet or perhaps a bit more . When using this rig not only can I adjust my depth quickly by simply letting out or retrieving line , I can also work the rod at critical times and give the rig some extra life and action . This comes into play when working shoreline structure while fast trolling spoons or Rapalas . Leadcore allows you to reach moderate depths with a lot less disturbance you can with a downrigger . Leadcore isn ’ t invasive . Its weight is distributed over its length , so it glides through the water very quietly with zero vibration .
