William’s army training kept them apart, said some.
The media pressure was too much for her, said others.

Kate was there when William was commissioned as a
British Army officer after graduating from Sandhurst
military college in 2006. She was photographed
attending public events, going to work, even getting
a parking ticket — a level of attention that evoked the
romance of William’s parents. William was determined
that she would not suffer the same media hounding
endured by his mother Princess Diana, who died in a
Paris car crash in 1997.
William proposed during a vacation in Kenya last
month, and gave Kate the engagement ring once worn
by his late mother, an oval blue sapphire surrounded
by diamonds from the jeweler Garrard.
«This was my way of making sure that my mother
didn’t miss out on today,» William said as the couple
posed for photographers in the state apartments at
St. James’ Palace.
Despite spending around 8 years together as a
couple, there have been some cooling off periods as
well. Prince William and Kate broke up in April of last
year, just when the media was also predicting a future
marriage for the couple.
In some ways it is probably best that the couple have
been together so long, and gotten all these breakups out of the way well before they got engaged, so
there is little chance of breaking up after they marry.
The couple started dating again this past summer,
according to reports. Just recently photos have
appeared of the two together at nightclubs. They also
were seen together at Camilla’s birthday celebration.
This announcement is a relief to all royal watchers,
ending years of rumored splits, reconciliations and
will-they, won’t-they speculation.
For those of us who watched the wedding of Charles
& Di, and followed the bitter breakdown of their
marriage, we all wanted joy to come into the lives of
the young Princes when they grew up and started
dating. Like so many others I have kept an eye on
their relationships, and it seemed to me that William
had found a ‘keeper’ when he started seriously dating
Kate Middleton. My only bemusement has been why
it has taken so long to get around to taking this next
step.
