Inside Business
Business hots up at woodyard
There’s nothing quite like a log fire to warm your hearth and home during the autumn and
winter, so it’s no wonder that wood-burners are becoming more and more popular across
the Island, with stove fitters working overtime to keep up with demand.
But the key to a good fire
is having the right fuel –
and that’s where specialist
supplier Chessell Woodyard
comes into its own.
The business has just
added a state-of-the-art
new drying warehouse
at its 2.5-acre site, and
supplies top quality
seasoned hardwood logs
that are guaranteed to
to keep those home fires
burning brightly right through the
winter.
Owner Pete Barnes sources his
oak, ash and beech woods directly
from the Forestry Commission
and private woodland owners, and
then expertly seasons and dries
them before delivering to
customers right across the
Island six days a week.
The company is also well-
known for its timber supply
and expert joinery service –
but at this time of year, the
firewood definitely takes a
front seat!

Directors’ Liabilities
In the course of speaking
to business owners,
NFU Mutual often finds
that many directors and
partners are not aware of
their personal liability.
This can be a serious oversight,
especially since the Companies
Act was amended in 2008 to
prevent directors “hiding behind
the corporate veil”. This means
that directors, officers and senior
managerial staff can be held
personally liable for any claims
arising from their actions and
decisions in their official capacities.
In such circumstances, personal
assets and wealth including
pensions could be subject to any
claim.
NFU Mutual points out that while
some insurance policies include
an element of legal expenses
protection, the limit of indemnity
may be lower than you need.
There are solutions available
to business owners, including
cover that can be bought by the
business to protect their personal
interests. For peace of mind, it may
be worth taking to your local NFU
Mutual agent, and taking advice
on the cover you require.
