Looking great
at 60 plus
OK, so you’ve passed the 50 mark and
before you know it you’re at the 60 mark
... time certainly flies. By now you’ve lived
through six decades and navigated your
way through all the twists and turns
life has thrown at you: in fact, you’re a
seasoned pro! Your body has played the
game all this time, however, and now
it may be showing signs of wear and
tear. Just when you think you have it
made, your body starts to morph into
this unrecognisable form thanks to
the dreaded menopause. Looking in a
full-length mirror reminds you of when
you were young, walking round the
fairground’s House of Mirrors!
Whereas women used to think life had ended at 60,
it’s no longer the case for today’s generation of 60 year
olds. Unlike the one that went before, this new ‘baby
boomer’ generation of women would not be seen dead
with a shopping trolley, Spandex trousers or an anorak
with head scarf covering the blue rinse. These were
the 60 year-olds of the past. The new generation has a
completely different view on looks and fashion. Gone
is the dowdy, mumsy look, and in comes grown-up
fashion, beauty treatments, cosmetic surgery, designer
dentists and advanced hair studios. This is a generation
that’s not about to grow old gracefully.
Fashion plays a big part for the current glut of 60
year olds, so out goes the blue rinse and in comes
a monthly visit to the hair studio (not hairdressers
anymore) at £100 a throw, out goes the Crimplene and
in come the stylish well-fitting clothes – in many cases,
with a designer label, (this is why BHS probably went
bust, they weren’t in touch with their new breed of 60+
customer) - and out comes the cheque book for those
regular visits to the beauty clinic.
So what’s changed? Quite simply, availability. Todays
women’s clothes offer fashion for all ages, the beauty
treatments are more advanced, dentists can perform
