Old-favourite venue set to rise from the ashes

One of the Island ’ s most popular venues in the mid- 1990s , Lugley ’ s of Newport , is set to be given a new lease of life with a new name , new image , and some great new menus .
Formerly operating as a hotel and restaurant , Lugley ’ s disappeared off the radar in early 2000 , but it ’ s recently been acquired by Matt Parker , current owner of the town ’ s nearby Wheatsheaf Hotel . The Lugley Street venue had been severely neglected over the last 10 years – but Matt is confident that with a bit of love and attention he can re-kindle the atmosphere Lugley ’ s used to enjoy in its heyday . “ The first thing that we ’ ve done is to change the name , and have decided to call it Hewitt ’ s to give it a new lease of life ” he says . “ There are so many positive things about the building and there ’ s wonderful enclosed walled garden to the rear , which will make a great destination during the summer months and an amazing venue for weddings and private parties . The dining room has lovely tall ceilings and a really great ambiance . It ’ s not particularly large , but I like this as it creates an intimate dining experience .” Matt has also managed to secure the skills of a talented new head
Chef – Josh Hammond , who was previously 2nd chef at the popular and award-winning Mojacs in Cowes . Mojacs was recently rated number two on trip advisor , and has also been listed in the Michelin Guide . Josh explained , “ I started at Mojacs as a kitchen porter and worked my way up . Over the 10 years I was there I achieved my Level 2 and 3 in catering . Recently , I felt it was time for me to look for a Head Chef position when this opportunity popped up . It was an opportunity that I couldn ’ t miss , and I am really excited .” Josh is also keen to pass on his skills , “ I was very lucky that Mojac ’ s gave me the opportunity to get where I am today , I learnt everything I know from Head Chef Mark Baldwin and am so grateful
