OUT & ABOUT A Clashof Knights T he banners were billowing, the tilt rail set and the armour all polished and ready for a programme of Medieval jousting contests in the historic and atmospheric setting of Carisbrooke Castle. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas, and some heavy downpours of rain meant that some of the jousts had to be called off. But visitors still found plenty of historyinspired activities to enjoy - including ‘hobby horse’ jousting, falcons in flight, Peterkin the court jester, entertainment from a band of merry musicians, and a taste of Medieval life in the living history encampments. And when the rain finally did go away, there was the spectacle of highly trained knights and their trusty steeds battling for honour in the ultimate display of chivalry. The general feeling was that the excitement had been well worth waiting for! Pictures by Graham Reading 40 www.goilife.co.uk
