Bib Gourmand for Seaview
T
he Michelin Guide 2016 has
just been released and it’s very
good news for the Isle of Wight
as Head Chef Bruce Theobald has won
a Bib Gourmand at the Seaview Hotel.
The Restaurant is the only venue on
the Island to win a Michelin Award.
Bruce took over as head chef in
March 2014. Since then he has
developed a Focus on Fish menu in the
main restaurant priced at 3 courses for
£28. His style is refreshingly unfussy
with emphasis on creative flavour
combinations, skilful preparation and
delivered at a price that makes dining
out affordable.
The Bib Gourmand award, created
by Michelin in 1997, is given to
inspectors’ favourite restaurants
who offer high-quality products and
services at good value for money.
There are now 155 Bib Gourmand
restaurants in the UK. The Restaurant
at the Seaview Hotel is one of 25 new
entrants in England and the only Isle of
Wight venue to be recognised with a
Michelin award.
The Restaurant at the Seaview
Hotel is open Tuesday - Saturday
throughout the winter. A set lunch is
available Tuesday- Saturday priced
at 2 courses for £17 or 3 courses for
£19.95 There are also 2 bars serving
pub classics.
New manager for The George
A
new General Manager arrived at
Yarmouth’s George Hotel in August
– and she has her eyes set firmly on
making the three-star waterfront venue
a top Island destination.
As a former Hotel and Restaurant
Inspector for the AA for over five
years, Sarah Evans has been trained to
demand the highest of standards, and
she will be using that laser vision in her
new role.
“The George already has a very good
reputation” she says, “but I want to build
on that and move it forward to the next
level”.
This will include consolidating the
team, as well as working with the
hotel’s owner Dame Dianne Thompson
on a programme of re-investment in
the elegant 17th century property.
Sarah comes to the Island after turning
around a dilapidated city centre hotel in
Edinburgh, and before that, achieving
three rosettes for food at a 30-bed hotel
in the Lake District.
She says that, as a country girl,
hailing from Northamptonshire,
she is delighted to be back in a rural
environment.
“The Island is a great location and
everyone I meet has been so friendly. I’ve
also been astounded at how much local
produce is available – not just fish, but a
whole range of things”.
One of Sarah’s other aims is to build on
the George’s programme of events, such
as cooking demonstrations, wine tasting
evenings, art days and dinner with some
guest speakers.
“The George is here for locals every
bit as much as it is for tourists,” says
Sarah. “This is such a beautiful building
and lovely setting that we want to give
everybody the chance to enjoy it”.
