Julian captures fun of Seaview Regatta
A
cclaimed Island photographer
Julian Winslow recently turned
his lens on the Seaview Village
Regatta. The event which features
swimming, sailing, rowing and the
notorious greasy pole has taken place in
the village for some 180 years.
Julian said: “I wanted to capture
and convey the warmth, vitality and
togetherness of this particularly English
occurrence. Across the generations there’s
a strong element of connection and
belonging, both to the land, the sea and
to each other.”
Julian, an Islander who describes
himself as’ bipedal humanoid
photographer’, attended Medina
High School before working alongside
experimental gardeners Chris Kidd
and Simon Goodenough at Ventnor
Botanic Garden. There he developed a
passion for photography documenting
the extraordinary and alluring world
of plants. Julian has been a commercial
photographer for some 12 years and his
commissions have taken him around
the world, taking portraits of celebrities,
rock stars and even Prince Charles. This
summer he won the ‘Self ’ competition at
the Quay Arts.
You can see ‘Regatta’ at the Seaview
Hotel Restaurant from October 14.
Sue catches the eye of Calvin Klein
W
hat have Calvin Klein, Kevin
Costner and Tom Kerridge
all got in common? The
answer is that they all love the work of
Island-based potter Sue Paraskeva.
Sue, who was recently commissioned
by Tom Kerridge to provide one-off
plates for his Two-Michelin Starred
restaurant The Hand and Flowers, said:
“There’s something about the nature of
handcrafted tableware that enhances
the experience of eating.”
The celebrity chef said that he was
‘blown away’ by the quality and artistr y
of her work. Meanwhile, ‘across the

pond’ Sue has been working with Calvin
Klein Home, and her large serving bowls
form part of their fall collection. She
added: “I think today there is a growing
appreciation for handcrafted items.
People wanted to be guided by their
senses and feelings rather than dictated
to by trend and fashion.”
Sue is a featured ceramicist in
Contemporary Ceramics by Emmanuel
Cooper and her hand thrown porcelain
is displayed in many galleries
throughout the country including
Contemporary Applied Arts, London
and China Contemporary, Margate.
