New Shanklin butchers
with old traditions
At a time when so many town
centre shops are closing, Paul
Murphy has bucked the trend by
opening a new butcher’s shop in
Shanklin.
Paul promises customers will be
greeted by a traditional butcher in
a traditional butcher’s shop when
they step inside new premises at 17
Regent Street, Shanklin. He smiled:
“It’s as ‘olde worlde’ as I could
make it without the sawdust on the
floor!”
He will be bringing with him a
wealth of experience in the trade
and will be offering quality meats,
with as much locally produced as
possible. He said: “As well as beef,
pork and lamb we will be selling
the likes of game, venison and
wild boar. I also make all my own
sausages, and within a few weeks

of opening I will be selling home
cured bacon.”
Paul will be assisted in the
shop by Kevin Lacey – another
experienced butcher – and
other produce on offer includes
uncooked pies, made locally in
Shanklin. He explained: “A lady
will be making them all ready for
the oven. The selection will include
Beef Wellington, Beef Balmoral,
pasties and pies.”
Paul set up a farm shop butchery
on the Island a few years ago, and
won the Island Life 2008 ‘Butcher
of the Year’ award. He later worked
for Hamilton’s, managing their
shop in Newport for four years,
before embarking on his new
project.”
