COUNTRY LIFE
Are you
drinking the
Wight stuff?
Dairy farmers on the Island have
joined together to encourage Island
supermarkets and shops to sell
their milk in an attempt to save
the Island’s dairy industry. The
campaign will also safeguard the
green fields of our countryside,
most of which lie within the
AONB of the Island.
These are important in many
ways, not least for habitat
biodiversity, well-being and the
tourist industry. Today the Island
can only boast 15 dairy farms, a
fall from more than 300 since the
1960s. Some 80 per cent of our
milk is transported to the mainland
and an estimated 26million litres
are transported back to be sold in
our shops.
Island dairy farmers have begun
a campaign to have more milk
processed and sold on the Island
and they are asking for your help
with the ‘I Love Isle of Wight Milk’
appeal, promoting themselves
and organising a petition to
urge supermarkets to sell more
locally sourced milk. To find out
more and support them go www.
