SOCIAL SCENE Hurricanes 50th Anniversary Wales Rugby legend Cliff Morgan was guest of honour when the Sandown and Shanklin RFC began their 50th Anniversary celebrations in style with a gala ball. Cliff, who has a home in Bembridge, was an iconic figure in the world of Rugby even before Sandown and Shanklin RFC was formed, playing for Cardiff and earning 29 caps for Wales between 1951 and 1958. After his retirement from the game, he turned to broadcasting, and it was fitting he should attend the celebrations at a time when Wales were just beginning their quest for glory at the World Cup finals in New Zealand. Sandown and Shanklin RFC, known as the Hurricanes, have recently kicked off the new campaign, and are hoping to secure promotion from the London South West Three division to coincide with their golden anniversary after finishing third in the table last season. Around 230 members and guests attended the ball in a marquee at the club’s headquarters at the Fairway Ground, Sandown. Life memberships were awarded to John Buckingham and Terry Connelly during the evening’s festivities. 48 www.visitislandlife.com
